Naples, Sorrento & Positano

Well, we we're in the home stretch of the trip. After Orvieto, we returned the rental car an hopped on the train for the Amalfi Coast, starting with Napoli, as the Italians call it. Our home base for the next 3 days was Sorrento, another hour train ride south of Naples, but we couldn't miss seeing the birthplace of pizza and the maffia.

Naples is a crazy city, which we're glad we only spent about 5 hours in. It is crowded, dirty (garbage workers strike), horrible traffic, etc., etc. At many points we feared for our lives while crossing the streets. We had 2 primary purposes, first, to see the artifacts from Pompeii in the National Museum, second, to eat pizza.

Sorrento sits just across the bay and is a beautiful resort town. Thanks to Chad's frequent business travels, we were able to stay in a nice room at the Hilton overlooking the bay of Sorrento with a view back to Mt. Vesuvius, Europe's only active volcano.

From Sorrento, we took a day trip to Pompeii, which you can see pics of in the next post, and to Positano via the most death defying, white knuckled, sickening rides I've ever been on outside of an amusement park. The Amalfi coast is truly magnificent and beautiful.
